How is jasmine sambac absolute extracted, and how does it differ from a steam-distilled essential oil?

It is produced by solvent extraction (the absolute process), not steam distillation — that is precisely why it is called an absolute and carries jasmine's true depth.

Two-Step Solvent Extraction Process

StageProcessKey parameters
1. ConcretePetroleum-ether maceration of fresh blossoms4 L solvent per kg flowers, ~96 min, yield 2.5–2.8%
2. AbsoluteCold ethanol wash to remove waxes10x ethanol, freeze at -15 to -20°C for 24–48 h, vacuum concentrate <50°C
Steam distillation destroys or degrades jasmine's delicate heat-sensitive molecules (jasmine lactone, methyl jasmonate) and delivers a far weaker scent, so the industry uses solvent extraction for this flower. The final product is a viscous absolute with no added carrier — 100% pure jasmine matter.

An alternative modern route is supercritical CO2 extraction (31–35°C, 10–13 MPa, 4–7 h), which reaches 3.5–4.0% yield — 15–25 times higher than the traditional method — while preserving a clean, natural aroma.

If your market requires the classic traditional profile, we supply the solvent-extracted version; if you need high-yield, low-residue material, ask for the CO2-extracted batch. Specify your application and we will recommend the right grade with a GC-MS comparison within 48 hours.
