How soluble is zedoary turmeric oil in different solvents?
Zedoary turmeric oil dissolves freely in most organic solvents and fixed oils, and is practically insoluble in water. The pharmacopoeia lists methanol, ethanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, chloroform, ether, toluene and petroleum ether as solvents in which it is readily soluble, which makes it easy to formulate into TCM products, massage oils and flavour concentrates.
Solubility Summary
| Solvent | Solubility | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Ethanol (95%+) | Readily soluble | Tinctures, sprays, perfumery bases |
| Fixed oils / carrier oils | Readily soluble | Massage blends, liniments |
| Propylene glycol | Soluble | Cosmetic and rinse formulations |
| Isopropyl myristate | Soluble | Emollient bases |
| Water / glycerin | Practically insoluble | Not suitable without solubiliser |
| Surfactant systems | Dispersible | Bath oils, shower gels with solubiliser |
Formulation Notes
- For aqueous products (mouthwash, bath milk), pre-dissolve the oil in ethanol or a non-ionic solubiliser, then add to the water phase with stirring
- For TCM topical oils, blend directly into a fixed-oil base (e.g. soybean oil, jojoba) at the required dilution
- Because it is sesquiterpene-rich and viscous, warming the oil to 30-40 C before mixing improves dissolution speed
- Avoid mixing large amounts directly into water without a solubiliser, or clouding and separation will occur
