What are the physicochemical properties of zedoary turmeric oil?
Zedoary turmeric oil is a medium-viscosity, sesquiterpene-rich oil. Our fragrance-grade specification allows a slightly wider range (density 0.950-1.020, RI 1.470-1.505), while pharmacopoeia-grade batches are held strictly inside the Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2025 ranges. The key constants below are tested on every batch by the general methods 0601-0622.
Physicochemical Constants
| Property | Fragrance grade | Pharmacopoeia grade (ChP 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Relative density (20 C) | 0.950-1.020 | 0.970-0.990 |
| Refractive index (20 C) | 1.470-1.505 | 1.500-1.510 |
| Optical rotation | +5 to +20 | +20 to +25 (50 mg/mL in ethanol) |
| Solubility | Soluble in ethanol and fixed oils | Readily soluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, chloroform, ether, toluene, petroleum ether |
| Water solubility | Insoluble | Practically insoluble in water |
| Flash point | About 85-95 C | Not specified (handle as combustible) |
| Shelf life | 36 months | Store in a cool, shaded, sealed container |
Notes
- Sesquiterpene-rich oils are denser and more viscous than citrus oils, which is expected
- Because of the wide density range, always compare results against the batch COA rather than a single textbook value
- The pharmacopoeia restricts pharmacopoeia-grade claims to its own ranges; fragrance-grade product may use the wider enterprise ranges
- Heavy metals ≤10 mg/kg and arsenic ≤2 mg/kg are tested by pharmacopoeia methods 0821 and 0822
