How is the wild rose absolute extracted?
The absolute is made by solvent extraction: fresh rose petals are extracted with petroleum ether or n-hexane, concentrated into a concrete, then dewaxed with ethanol to yield the clear, fat-soluble absolute.
Extraction Details
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Method | Solvent extraction (absolute / 净油) |
| Raw material | Fresh wild rose blossoms |
| Solvent | Petroleum ether / n-hexane extraction |
| Intermediate | Rose concrete (浸膏) after solvent recovery |
| Dewaxing | Ethanol extraction of the concrete, chilled and filtered to remove waxes |
| Product | Rose absolute — the alcohol-soluble, wax-reduced fraction |
- Absolute extraction preserves the full-bodied floral wax-fixative character that steam distillation cannot
- Benzyl alcohol / phenylethyl alcohol (苯乙醇) stays at 30–60% in the absolute, versus only 1–3% in a distilled rose oil
- Reference patents CN102492541A (supercritical CO₂ wild rose fruit oil, 40–55°C / 25–35 MPa) and CN106418663A (enzyme + molecular distillation) describe related high-yield routes
- Residual solvent is monitored and controlled to meet food-additive and cosmetic purity limits
