FAQ Header

Which botanical species does this peppermint oil come from, and where is it grown?

This peppermint oil (TPS-RO-006) is steam-distilled from the fresh flowering herb of Mentha × piperita L., the natural hybrid of watermint (Mentha aquatica) and spearmint (Mentha spicata). Because the hybrid is sterile, it is propagated vegetatively (by runners), which keeps the planting uniform and the oil composition stable.

Piperita vs Asian Mint (Important for Specifications)

  • M. × piperita (this oil) carries higher menthyl acetate (3-10%) and menthofuran, giving a sweeter, cleaner aroma
  • M. haplocalyx (Asian mint, the ChP 2025 薄荷素油 source) has higher menthol (50-60%) but lower menthone/ester levels and is usually partially de-mentholated
  • The Chinese Pharmacopoeia entry applies to the Asian-mint oil, while this product follows GB 1886.278-2016 and ISO 856:2006 for M. × piperita — confirm the species on the COA to avoid specification mismatches

Supply Notes

  • US Pacific Northwest and Indian Uttar Pradesh are the two largest commercial origins; Chinese production (Anhui/Jiangxi/Hunan) serves both domestic and export demand
  • Origin affects menthol/menthone balance: US oil is typically high-menthol (40-55%), Chinese lots run 30-50%
  • We supply standard grade from stock and can source origin-specific lots (e.g. US type) on request
