What is the IFRA and allergen status of this patchouli oil?

Under the 51st Amendment of the IFRA Code of Practice (IFRA 51), patchouli oil (Pogostemon cablin) has an excellent safety profile: no IFRA-restricted substances are flagged in the 59-compound restricted list, and the oil is unrestricted across categories Cat 2 through Cat 12. Only two categories are not approved for this botanical: Category 1 (lip products) and Category 6 (oral/mouth-care products).

EU Allergen Declaration (EU 1223/2009 Annex III)

  • Patchouli oil itself is not listed as an individual Annex III allergen
  • The plant extract listing that can appear on labels is POGOSTEMON CABLIN OIL; trace natural constituents are at levels below the labelling threshold in typical use
  • If your formula contains the oil at levels triggering the labelling duty, the label must list the oil under its INCI name
