How consistent is the michelia leaf oil from batch to batch?
Batch-to-batch consistency is tightly controlled because michelia leaf oil is graded largely on linalool content, and we source from the same Fujian/Guangdong producing districts every season.
Consistency Controls
| Check | Control target |
|---|---|
| Linalool (GC area%) | ≥ 70% per GB 1886.276; typical 80-88% on premium runs |
| Relative density (20°C) | 0.860-0.900, batch target ±0.005 |
| Refractive index (20°C) | 1.455-1.475, batch target ±0.002 |
| Optical rotation (20°C) | −16° to −7°, stable levorotatory (R)-linalool profile |
| Methyl eugenol | 0.2-0.5% typical, tracked per batch for IFRA paperwork |
| Aroma | Sensory panel sign-off against the reference standard |
What We Do Differently
- Every batch is distilled from fresh leaves harvested in the same window (same season, similar maturity) to reduce natural drift
- GC-MS fingerprint of each batch is compared to the retained master chromatogram — a matching score is attached to the COA
- Chiral GC is available to confirm the (R)-linalool enantiomeric excess (≥ 90% ee typical), a strong identity marker that separates natural michelia oil from synthetic linalool blends
- In the rare case a batch drifts outside tolerance, it is blended back within spec or downgraded — never shipped out of spec
