How soluble is this geranium oil — solubility profile?
Geranium oil is a hydrophobic, volatile oil. Solubility behaviour matters for formulation: it tells you whether the oil stays clear in alcohol-based perfumes, how to emulsify it into water-based cosmetics, and why simple water dilution is not the right approach.
Solubility Profile
| Solvent / System | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| Water | Insoluble — separates and floats; shaking forms only a temporary dispersion |
| 70% ethanol | 1 vol + 3 vol 70% ethanol gives a clear solution (slight opalescence allowed) — the routine QC miscibility test |
| 95-96% ethanol | Miscible in all proportions, clear |
| Fixed oils (jojoba, sweet almond, etc.) | Soluble and miscible — the usual carrier for skin-care and massage blends |
| Glycerin / propylene glycol | Partially soluble; glycols can be used with care in diluted systems |
| Surfactant systems | Emulsifies with a suitable emulsifier for shower gels, lotions, and sprays |
- For perfumes and alcohol-based skin care, pre-dissolve the oil in ethanol before adding water or glycerin
- For massage and facial blends, blend with a fixed vegetable oil — no surfactant needed
- In creams and lotions, add the oil to the oil phase during emulsification, not after
- The 70% ethanol 1:3 clarity test is written into the batch QC check, matching ISO 4731 and QB/T 3764
- Never add pure oil directly to water and expect a uniform product — it will not dissolve
