How does gardenia hydrosol differ from gardenia essential oil?

The hydrosol and the essential oil are two products from the same distillation: the oil is the concentrated, water-insoluble aromatic phase, while the hydrosol is the saturated floral water.

ComparisonHydrosolEssential Oil
Physical formWater, miscibleOil, immiscible with water
AromaSoft, round, naturalRich, intense, concentrated
Typical useToners, mists, water-phase skincarePerfumery, aromatherapy, oil-phase blends
Solubility100% water-solubleRequires solubilizer or carrier oil
Because it is water-based, the hydrosol is gentler for leave-on facial care and can be used at high percentages where the oil would be too intense or require solubilizing. Many finished-product brands combine both: hydrosol as the water phase and the oil in the fragrance or oil phase.
